Scarifying from Pebbles property management and gardening

Scarifying in spring for a healthy lawn in summer - new from Pebbles

At this time of year, the lawn can start to look pretty shabby. partly because the weather has been grey and extremely wet but also because of the build up of dead grass, moss and other debris, collectively known as thatch, which inhibits the growth and health of your lawn.

As spring approaches however, and the weather is set to improve, now is the time to start putting plans in place to do something about it, so that by the time summer rolls around, there’s plenty of space for those ball games and sun loungers or for simply enjoying the lovely green lawn.

What is scarifying?

Pebbles Gardening is now offering a scarifying service to do just this. Also known as de-thatching, scarifying uses rotating steel blades to cut out thatch and at the same time it helps to aerate the lawn, allowing it to breathe again. By doing this once or twice a year, it not only improves the appearance of the lawn at that time, but also helps to reduce the chance of moss and nasty elements growing up in the future.

The service can also be combined with the option to overdress and top seed the lawn. This involves putting more grass seed back down, as well as a layer of top soil, in order to help seeds germinate. The effect is like having a brand new lawn.

When should scarifying be done at your holiday home?

It is recommended that scarifying is done either once or twice a year, and conditions need to be dry, which is why it’s advised for spring and/or autumn. If it is too wet you can risk damaging the lawn, and if it’s too cold then new seeds simply won’t germinate. There is a recommended recovery period of up to two weeks after scarifying, in which you must not walk on the grass and it’s important to make sure it doesn’t dry out but doesn’t become sodden either.

For holiday homes, this naturally means that timing is important, and with that in mind, we are currently booking clients in from March between the upcoming school holidays. The service is in addition to regular gardening services, and if necessary we can combine it with the addition of timed sprinkler services.
