Pebbles in the Community

The surrounding community in Salcombe and Kingsbridge is really important to Pebbles.  We employ between 44 and 100 members of staff with seasonal variations, and 98% live within 10 miles of Kingsbridge.

So we do whatever we can when we can to be a proactive and contributing part of that in everything we do.  That means enhancing our service by providing pipelines of work to other local suppliers, providing meaningful career support and progression for our team, and getting involved in local initiatives and events.

Here we have endeavoured to illustrate a few of the ways we aim to play a proactive role in the community that gives us so much joy and support as individuals and as a company.

Our base in Salcombe

With our heritage firmly placed in Salcombe, we solidified our commitment to our hometown in 2017 with the extension and refurbishment of our head office on Island Street.  However, investment in the team both past, present and future does not begin and end with the uniforms, office spaces and industry leading communications technologies.

Nurturing local talent

At Pebbles we make no secret of our quest for excellence in everything we do.  The service we offer is one built on five star principles, and as such we aim for the same level of exceptional skill in our team as well.  However, excellence for us means many things.  Empathy, care and consideration are very much a part of the Pebbles mantra, so we are also huge advocates of prioritising soft skills and investing in the technical development of our people.

Through apprenticeships, upskilling, staff perks, flexible working, and a community style of operating, Pebbles has always been, and continues to be, committed to providing long term possibilities and options for local talent, supporting growth and development for a secure collective future.

Carol’s story

Having taken early retirement from her career as a chemistry teacher, Carol is now a Senior Housekeeper at Pebbles.  Her attention to detail is second to none and her ability to support and train other members of staff, a skill directly related to her teaching career, are a vital asset to quality assurance in Pebbles Housekeeping.

Carly’s story

Our unflappable Property Operations Assistant Manager joined the team as a Customer Service Apprentice in 2014 following a career change and having previously worked as a carer. After her award-winning apprenticeship she won a full time role with Pebbles and since then there has been no looking back.

Sponsoring events, local awards and community initiatives valued by our team

Recognising that investing in our team is also about happiness beyond the workplace, and with the surrounding communities in Kingsbridge and Salcombe being such a point of pride and personal value to members of our team, Pebbles is a regular contributor to local initiatives.

We have contributed to the spectacular effort of the all-female transatlantic rowing team Astro-to Atlantic.  We have also sponsored the junior and women’s Kingsbridge rugby teams, and we have been leading supporters of local awards schemes supporting youth business opportunities in the South Hams.

Pebbles at Crabfest

Pebbles has supported the local Crabfest event every year since it began, each year embracing a collaboration with another local business to celebrate the initiative set up by the Rotary Club of Salcombe in aid of a chosen charity.

Supporting Astro to Atlantic

In December 2018 Lou, Helen, Chloe and Emily from Kingsbridge, who made up the Astro to Atlantic team, set off on one of the most challenging rowing expeditions in the world, to raise money for the Devon Air Ambulance - a charity that’s close to the hearts of everyone living and working across Devon.  It was a great honour for Pebbles to be amongst the sponsors helping them to achieve their goal.

Sponsoring Kingsbridge Rugby Club

Pebbles has sponsored the uniforms juniors and ladies teams at Kingsbridge Rugby Club for two seasons now.  The club has achieved great acclaim from the Rugby Football Union.  Over 400 children come from far and wide to train at the club each week and it’s been a real joy to see over the years.

Pebbles supports Kingsbridge Scouts

As a business run by a family and with many families within it, supporting family focused initiatives is a very personal and important thing to us.  In 2019 we sponsored new signage at the Scout’s Hut in Kingsbridge with that in mind.
