Salcombe Festival 2009
The Salcombe Festival of Music and Sail will return for the 14th time between 11th and 13th June, with Island Street bigger and better than ever. Pebbles will again proudly present fun, games and a Salcombe school performance at its offices in Island Square, Island Street on Saturday 12th.
A true family celebration of the picturesque coastal resort, both in town and on the water, the Festival will welcome newly discovered acts on the main stage at Whitestrand, classical music and a wide range of street entertainment. Classic boats from distant ports will grace the estuary with the festival’s Keelboat Regatta taking place on the Saturday, joined by a flotilla of lifeboats and steamboats too. Dinghies from the town’s Yacht Club will compete throughout the weekend for the coveted Chris Millward Festival Trophy in memory of the festival’s founding chairman. On Island Street the Island Cruising Club will provide a much-loved barbecue, bar and jazz. Salcombe Holiday Homes will provide a band and pig roast in front of its offices at the Gould Road end. Boat builders welcomed sight-seers and the street’s galleries opened their doors with Bang Wallop holding an exhibition of music photography. In Island Square the Rowing Club will show off its gig, Salcombe Genie held ‘sweets in sand’ games for children, and Pebbles of Salcombe had competitions for adults too! The highlight will be two performances by Salcombe Primary School created by Rebecca of the South Hams Arts Collective, organised by Pebbles. During the Saturday and Sunday, a variety of street entertainers will return to “wow!” the crowds, including buskers, jugglers, Iowa 4 - the local Barbershop Quartet and ‘Stiltskin’ walkabout theatre. For the energetic there was traditional country dancing from 4 Feet First, sea shanty singing and a marvelous 20 strong ukulele band called N.ukes. Many thanks to Geoff Foale for use of his photographs.
